Fremont Brewing's Day Flying Coconut IPA

7% ABV 48 IBU
Untappd - 3.73/5
Beer Advocate - 3.84/5

21A. American IPA

A decidedly hoppy and bitter, moderately strong American pale ale, showcasing modern American or New World hop varieties. The balance is hopforward, with a clean fermentation profile, dryish finish, and clean, supporting malt allowing a creative range of hop character to shine through.

Found at Market of Choice in Eugene, OR - Hails from Seattle, WA

An IPA with coconut?! Need I say more?! If I do, I'm not gonna...on to the review!

Appearance: A golden color with an orange hue...some might say light amber. Creamy, fluffy white head. Enticing.  8

Aroma: Tropical elements mostly displayed with a candied orange mostly coming through. Coconut is prominent of course, with an herbal/spicy hop note on the back.  7.7

Flavor: Sweet tropical fruits like mango and orange on the front. Nicely layered with toasted coconut and a decent dose of bitter on the back.  7.9

Mouthfeel: A creamy and smooth brew (probably from the coconut). Has a medium body and nice level of carbonation. Well done.  8.1

Overall: Day Flying from Fremont didn't disappoint in the satisfaction category. The coconut aspect had me intrigued enough to try it but would only work for me if it were an accent rather than the main flavor. Mission accomplished! If I come across this brew again, I would definitely buy it...unless I am doing another beer review of course.  7.93

Digital Dreams by Matchless Brewing

6% ABV IBU - none listed
Untappd - 3.84/5
Beer Advocate - 3.76/5

5D. German Pils

A light-bodied, highly-attenuated, gold-colored, bottom-fermented bitter German beer showing excellent head retention and an elegant, floral hop aroma. Crisp, clean, and refreshing, a German Pils showcases the finest quality German malt and hops.

Found at Whole Foods Market in Eugene, OR - Hails from Tumwater, WA

Yet another brew that is distinctly hard to classify. You could say, "oh it's a pilsner, classify it as a good ol' fashioned German Pils." But the Brut in me says it could also be an experimental beer. Besides, it doesn't let me know the hops used for it. Alas, I decided to go the traditional route...knowing the brew is not going to be traditional. Hmmmm, what a conundrum! On to the review!

Appearance: A clear golden straw with a hint of green when held up to the light...interesting. Has a decent 1/2 inch head with good lacing. Bubbly.  7.9

Aroma: Sweet malt and a touch of honey. Combined with a delicate citrus note. A little grassy as well.  7.6

Flavor: Much like the aroma. Sweet malt and a touch of honey. Layered with lemongrass as well as some grassy hops on the back end. Refreshing.  7.9

Mouthfeel: A light bodied brew that's crisp and on the dry side. Nice bubbly zing.  7.8

Overall: I am not a huge fan of Pilsner's, but if done right, they are quite tasty. This was done right. I also liked the added flare of the Brut bubbliness of it. It's a nice brew to drink on a hot summer day or a nice rainy spring day when dreaming of summer. Nicely done Matchless.  7.8

Aloha Death by Iron Horse Brewing

Brewed with Coconut

6.56% ABV
Untappd - 3.73/5

16A. Sweet Stout

A very dark, sweet, full-bodied, slightly roasty ale that can suggest coffee-and-cream, or sweetened espresso.

Found at Get & Go Grocery in Cottage Grove, OR - Hails from Ellensburg, WA

I decided to try a new place for beer. I got the impression it's a hit or miss kinda place. The brew itself is an enigma. It could be a porter, it could be something else. I decided to classify it as a sweet stout...even though it says it's a dark ale. Their isn't really a category for dark ale and if you're going to be vague on the style intended, I'll decide! It's my blog! I make the rules! On to the review!

Appearance: A coffee brown with a creamy tan head. We're off to a good start here.  8

Aroma: Mostly a malty, bready aroma. Of course, the coconut is huge as well. I do detect a little bit of coffee and chocolate but...did I say coconut already. Yeah, definitely coconut.  7.2

Flavor: Well, you can taste the coconut. It's a sweet brew (why I classified it as a sweet stout) that does have chocolate on the back of the tongue. I would like more of it to round the brew out a bit.  7

Mouthfeel: Thin and low body for a darker brew. That's all I have to say about that.  7

Overall: Aloha Death has all the makings for a terrific brew. It's not quite there yet. A little more balancing of the Coconut with the chocolate (and a higher ABV!) and we're cooking with this one. I did enjoy it as is and would consider buying it again.  7.3

Coldfire Brewing's Italian-Style Pilsner

Indie Batch Series

5.2% ABV 27 IBU's
Untappd - 3.97/5
To cool for Beer Advocate

5D. German Pils Overall Impression: A light-bodied, highly-attenuated, gold-colored, bottom-fermented bitter German beer showing excellent head retention and an elegant, floral hop aroma. Crisp, clean, and refreshing, a German Pils showcases the finest quality German malt and hops.

Found at Market of Choice (Willamette St) - Hails from their local Eugene Public House.

I know what you're thinking (not really, I am just taking a stab), how can an Italian-style Pilsner be in the German Pils guidelines? Well, you take a German Pilsner, add some floral hops, a little bit of bitter citrus and a Vespa (with an Italian gentleman saying ciào) and violà! Oh wait, "violà" is French...I guess that explains the Moulon Rouge in the background of the beer picture...On to the review!

Appearance: A golden straw color with a fancy, foamy head. Nice lacing as the head dissipates.  8

Aroma: A big floral presence upfront with a herbal and malty aroma backbone. Has a citrus undertone to it as well.  7.9

Flavor: Clean with a floral sweetness to start which quickly gravitates to a citrus bitterness. Has a nice, peppery spiciness kick to it as well that lingers on the back of the throat.  8

Mouthfeel: Crisp, bright and light bodied. The pepper on the back, while tasty, is a little harsh...just a little.  7.8

Overall: I really liked this Pilsner from Coldfire. I don't drink them that often because Pilsners are just not that interesting to me. Don't get me wrong, a well done Pilsner is great in certain situations, they just don't make their way into my hand the way a barrel-aged stout does. The Italianizing does add character to the Pilsner style that I can get behind. Well done Coldfire! Ciào!  7.92

Fruit Monster by Great Notion Brewing

28B. Mixed-Fermentation Sour Beer

American Wild Ales are beers that are introduced to "wild" yeast or bacteria, such as Brettanomyces, Pediococcus, or Lactobacillus. This introduction may occur from oak barrels that have been previously inoculated, pitching into the beer, or gained from various "sour mash" techniques. Regardless of the method, these yeast and/or bacteria leave a mark that should be noticeable to strong, and often contribute a sour and/or funky, wild note. Mixed-fermentation examples will display a range of aromatics, rather than a single dominant character.

From the source in Portland, Oregon.

Shout out to my good friend Jeremy Eckstein for offering to grab me a four pack of this beauty (also another four pack of Pineapple Pillows IPA). This made for quite the treat on Mother's Day...I just need an encore for Father's Day.

Appearance: A delectable creamy tangerine with a foamy white head. The head dissipates quickly leaving a hazy good looking brew...I must admit, the hazy look is growing on me a bit.   8.3

Aroma: A bright guava and mango bonanza. I couldn't make out the peach but sometimes my sniffer fails me...especially this time of year. Still, if you could taste an aroma...  8.4

Flavor: Uuuuuuh, maybe you can taste an aroma? The tartness delivers up front with explosions of peach, mango and guava one right after the other...what more do you need?  If I were crazy, maybe pineapple.  8.4

Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth. This low to medium carbonated brew goes down quite easy and is highly refreshing.  8.2

Overall: My last post was about the Wishing Wand, which is still my favorite. But this crowd-pleaser just landed in second position, pushing out Mango Flossi. Great Notion has quite the reputation. I have not had anything bad from them...then again, I have only had 3 brews from them. They are hard to get a hold of in my neck of the woods (even though I reside in the same state).  This version (that's right, I said version) of the Fruit Monster was delicious. I can't wait to try another version of it. 8.33

I am going to make this quick and easy. I chose this beauty on the recommendation of the new Beer/Wine Steward at the grocery store. It was the first thing he brought in, so it's as near to a can't miss situation you can possibly find yourself...if you like sours...and I do. I am thinking it's the perfect companion for my mental health day. On to the review!

Appearance: Oooooh, pretty. The color is magnificent. A deep pinkish blue with a head the color of pink icing on a cake. Really big head that stays for a long time. Very inviting.  8.5

Aroma: Sour berries is at the fore front of this brew. I obviously smell the boysenberry but it is also reminiscent of raspberry and a touch of blueberry. I rechecked the label...still says it just boysenberry.  8.3

Flavor: Nice, berry puckerlishissness that dives into some funk and trails off with a little bit of sweetness. Has a slightly sour aftertaste. The boysenberry definitely shines in this one. The missus didn't enjoy it too much (she actually hated it but not surprising since sours are at the bottom of her list of enjoyment) but I like it a lot.  9

Mouthfeel: A crisp and dry sour. Low to medium mouthfeel. Doesn't drink like an imperial...dangerous.  8.9

Overall: The Wishing Wand has me wishing that I had purchased two of them. It's probably the best sour I have had (outside of the one I made of course) but the Mango Flossi is a close second. Urban Family is popular for their sours and I can see why. Highly recommend.  8.68

Ancestry Brewing's Glori Haze Imperial Hazy IPA

7.8% ABV 63 IBU
Beer Advocate score - N/A
Untappd score 3.83/5

21A. American IPA

A decidedly hoppy and bitter, moderately strong American pale ale, showcasing modern American or New World hop varietihe balance is hopforward, with a clean fermentation profile, dryish finish, and clean, supporting malt allowing a creative range of hop character to shine through.

Found at Market of Choice (Willamette St) - Hails from Tualatin, OR

I was taking my time through the beer section and this little guy caught my eye. I now know why you want to avoid driving red cars...they do cause more eyes to drift their way. But with beer cans, you don't have to worry about the coppers...unless you have an open container while driving. That is a whole other issue entirely and one I can't help you with. On to the review!

Appearance: It has a thin layer of white foam sitting on top an apple ciderish looking brew. The only way to distinguish it from cider are the tiny white chunks. I will never get used to the "look" of a hazy. 7.3

Aroma: Nice dankness to the citrus hop aroma. I detect guava and tangerine mostly. Tropical fruits galore for sure. 8

Flavor: Intense citrus hop flavor up front but not overly bitter. Not a real malty IPA but enough to be well balance with the citrus and bitter of the hops. A highly quaff-able brew.  8.1

Mouthfeel: It has a nice mid medium mouthfeel that is really smooth. Good carbonation level as well. 7.8

Overall: I really enjoyed the Glori Haze. So much so, I later returned to Market of Choice and purchased another. It's probably the best version of a hazy that I have had outside Anchorage Brewing's hazy IPA's. Stellar job by Ancestry Brewing. 7.8

Orval Trappist Ale by Brasserie D'Orval

6.9% ABV No IBU's
Beer Advocate score - 4.24/5
Untappd score 3.73/5

24B. Belgian Pale Ale

A moderately malty, somewhat fruity, easy-drinking, copper-colored Belgian ale that is somewhat less aggressive in flavor profile than many other Belgian beers. The malt character tends to be a bit biscuity with light toasty, honey-like, or caramelly components; the fruit character is noticeable and complementary to the malt. The bitterness level is generally moderate, but may not seem as high due to the flavorful malt profile.

Found at The Brewstation in Cottage Grove, OR -  Hails from Abbaye de Notre-Dame d'Orval, Villers-devant-Orval, Belgium

The Brewstation is my favorite watering hole here in The Grove (which now produces their own beer under the moniker of Coast Fork Brewing). While getting a fill for my growler with the new Brice Creek Brown Ale, I decided to splurge a little more and brought home my first true Trappist Ale. I know, right? My first one. I had no idea what to expect. By the way, if you are ever in Cottage Grove, the CFB brews are definitely worth your while. The Brice Creek Brown is a fine example of the style. On to the review!

Appearance: A nice copperish to amber color with a huge beige head. Has really good retention and has lovely lacing as it dissipates. 7.9

Aroma: A spicy and bready aroma abounds on this one. A little bit of clove, sweet malt and raisin rounds it out.  7.6

Flavor: A good dose of malt with a twinge of sour fruit. A spicy undertone with hints of barnyard. Nicely balanced and quite refreshing.  8.3

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel with a smooth finish despite the lively carbonation. Not to say the carbonation is off-putting...it isn't. 7.9

Overall: Can I have monks make all my beers? That was a delicious, well balanced brew that even the missus didn't mind (I saw a look, she almost took it from me). Definitely saying a lot. Whenever you see this on the shelf, go ahead and take it home...it doesn't cost much and you won't regret it. 7.92

Breakside Brewery & The Rare Barrel present I Can Show You the World

Brewed with Jasmine

5.3% ABV No IBU's
Beer Advocate score - 3.98/5
Untappd score 3.76/5

3B. Czech Premium Pale Lager

Rich, characterful, pale Czech lager, with considerable malt and hop character and a long, rounded finish. Complex yet well-balanced and refreshing. The malt flavors are complex for a Pilsner-type beer, and the bitterness is strong but clean and without harshness, which gives a rounded impression that enhances drinkability.

Found at Safeway - Hails from Portland, OR & Oakland, CA

While in the midst of the pandemic, This bottle caught my eye. It looked like a pandemic spread map on the side of a bottle and I thought it would be the perfect beer to curl up in a ball and drink, dreaming of a better tomorrow where sports still exist. And fewer sick people. And sports bars...or any bars really. That would be nice too. But for now, this will have to suffice. On to the review!

Appearance: Nice straw/corn color. Clear and no haze with a beautiful white head. 8

Aroma: A little bit of malt character with a little bit of hops. The jasmine is detectable but not pronounced. Was hoping for a bit more.  7

Flavor: It is a super clean taste. Malty, sweet and a good dose of floral jasmine. A well balanced brew that tastes better than the smell.  8.2

Mouthfeel: Light. Crisp. Dry. Not much else to say.  8

Overall: I don't normally rank pilsners and lagers this high but it definitely deserves it. The aromas almost made me disappointed with my purchase but that first sip was really good. And it kept getting better. The more I consumed this beverage, the more pronounced the sweet jasmine came out to party. I highly recommend this brew if you can find it. 7.8

Anchor's Down Amber Ale from Wolf Tree Brewery

8.5% ABV No IBU's
Beer Advocate score - 4.13/5
Untappd score 4.13/5

19A. American Amber Ale

An amber, hoppy, moderate-strength American craft beer with a caramel malty flavor. The balance can vary quite a bit, with some versions being fairly malty and others being aggressively hoppy. Hoppy and bitter versions should not have clashing flavors with the caramel malt profile.

From the Market of Choice - Hails from Seal Rock, OR

Is this really my first Amber Ale review?!? How have I overlooked this category for soooo long? It's not like I haven't been drinking them (I have had my fair share of Ambers). Maybe because not many new Amber Ales hit the market. This one is new though and I took notice. Oh yes, I took notice. On to the review!

Appearance: A nice clear, nutty amber color with a fingers width tan head. Dissipates quickly with good lacing. 8

Aroma: Mostly biscuit and sweet caramel. Notes of toffee. Hops are there in the back and are a little grassy.  7

Flavor: Bitter up front but gives way to a delicately sweet caramel touch. A really nice malty backbone.  7.8

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel with not quite enough carbonation. A touch bit more and it would be just right.  7.3

Overall: A solid offering by the guys from the NW Oregon coast. It's difficult in this IPA world to find an offering like this because not many do it. While this does not make my top list of brewski's, it is one I will buy again. When the price is right and it's a solid beer, that means it has the capacity of being a go to brew. 7.5

I Can't Help But Feel a Specific Anger of Waiting in Line to Swipe at the Subway Turnstile Behind Someone Who Does Not Know How to Swipe Double IPA from Evil Twin Brewing

8.5% ABV No IBU's
Beer Advocate score - 4.13/5
Untappd score 4.13/5

22A. Double IPA

An intensely hoppy, fairly strong pale ale without the big, rich, complex maltiness and residual sweetness and body of an American barleywine. Strongly hopped, but clean, dry, and lacking harshness. Drinkability is an important characteristic; this should not be a heavy, sipping beer.

From a Tavour shipment - Hails from Queens, New York

It's getting crazy out there so what do you do to pass the time? I am a sports geek and a beer geek...without sports, I turn my attention to good beer. This one comes from one of my favorite experimental breweries. They always have some crazy concoction that you just want to try...even if it sounds like it could be totally disgusting. That's the thing about experimental beers, you never know what you will get. This one is fairly straight forward though but it had a cool name. Long but cool. And I just couldn't turn it down. On to the review!

Appearance: Thick golden ale. Not clear cause it's a hazy IPA. Nice brilliant white head that lasts for a good long time. Awesome lacing. 9

Aroma: Citrus forward with Tangerine and Grapefruit. A well balanced dank hop aroma up front. Smells as if it were double dry hopped.  8

Flavor: Definitely well balanced. Quite a bit of Orange citrus with a nice floral bouquet of hop flavor.  8

Mouthfeel: Right amount of carbonation and medium bodied. Lingers but not thick. Dangerously crushable.  8

Overall: Evil Twin always meets my expectations. This one is no different. It keeps getting better the more you drink it. While I have had better IPA's, this one is comfortably in the top 5-10 range. And it seems my score is right on par with everyone else.  8.25

Weldwerks Brewing Starry Night Milk Stout

Hazelnut, Toasted Coconut & Milk Chocolate

7.5% ABV
Beer Advocate score - 4.18/5
Untappd score 4.15/5

16A. Sweet Stout

A very dark, sweet, full-bodied, slightly roasty ale that can suggest coffee-and-cream, or sweetened espresso.

Shipment from Tavour - Hails from Greeley, Colorado

Milk stouts are quickly becoming one of my favorite styles. So when I saw this one from Weldwerks, I deftly maneuvered my fingers and brought this one home. I really enjoyed their 3.8 Miles Double IPA and I am guessing this will be a treat as well. On to the review!

Appearance: It's a dark brew with reddish and brownish hues...thought it would be a little darker. Has a thin mocha head with not much lacing.  7.1

Aroma: The hazel-nuttiness hits first but you quickly realize the coconut and chocolate are present as well. Enough to make your mouth water. Definitely a dessert beer.  8.2

Flavor: It's a nice balance of the sweetness of the coconut and chocolate along with the nutty hazelnut. There is a tad bit of hop bitterness but nothing to write home about...like an afterthought...  8.1

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated for a stout. Interestingly has a low to medium body. Was hoping for a creamier feel. Overall doesn't detract from experience too much.  7

Overall: Another solid effort from Weldwerks Brewing. I wouldn't put it into the upper echelon of Milk Stouts but it was enjoyable. Was hoping for it to have a creamier mouthfeel but the high carbonation took that away a little bit. Fix that issue and maybe use dark chocolate instead and then we can talk about upper echelon. 7.6

Methodical Hazy IPA from Barrier Brewing Company

Collaboration with Kino's County Brewers Collective

7.7% ABV No IBU's
Beer Advocate score - N/A
Untappd score 3.87/5

21A. American IPA

A decidedly hoppy and bitter, moderately strong American pale ale, showcasing modern American or New World hop varietihe balance is hopforward, with a clean fermentation profile, dryish finish, and clean, supporting malt allowing a creative range of hop character to shine through.

From a Tavour shipment - Hails from Oceanside & Brooklyn, New York

Next up from the latest Tavour shipment is the Methodical Hazy IPA from Barrier. When it comes to IPA's, you just want to see how well they balance the hop and the malt. Sometimes, like here in the PNW, the hop outweighs the malt cause we have a higher rate of hop heads per capita. It gets really hard to find an IPA that meets the balance. I have high hopes for this one...I mean, with a name like Methodical, it has to be well balanced...right? On to the review!

Appearance: It has a thick eggshell colored head. The brew is straw colored and a little hazy. Not overdone on the haze but also not a rich color. 7.7

Aroma: Smells a lot like the cleaner Pine Sol. Astringent but not unpleasant...if that is possible. A little unexpected. And by little, I mean a lot.  7

Flavor: Nicely balanced. The hops are not overwhelming with a clean malty back bone. Clean, fresh, piney and lemony. A lot like Pine Sol but I am sure it tastes way better. Nicely done.  8

Mouthfeel: Crisp and light. Dry but not to dry and the right amount of carbonation.  8

Overall: Barrier Brewing (with the help from KCBC) does a solid job with this particular brew. I found it thirst quenching and it had good flavor. I do think there are better offerings in the PNW but I wouldn't say no to another.  7.66

Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout by Wyndridge Farm Brewing

Aged in Hidden Hills Spirits Bourbon barrels

13.9% ABV
Beer Advocate score - 4.38/5
Untappd score 4.18/5

20C. Imperial Stout

An intensely-flavored, big, dark ale with a wide range of flavor balances and regional interpretations. Roasty-burnt malt with deep dark or dried fruit flavors, and a warming, bittersweet finish. Despite the intense flavors, the components need to meld together to create a complex, harmonious beer, not a hot mess.

Shipment from Tavour - Hails from Dallastown, PA

It just seems like I review a lot of Imperial Stouts. I don't do it on purpose (or do I?), they are really hard to pass up. Maybe I should be more selective about these things...probably not gonna happen though. If given a choice between a Double IPA and a Bourbon Barrel Imperial, I am bourbon every time. Sorry IPA, dark beer has stolen my heart.

Appearance: Pours a deep black color with a thin mocha head. The head dissipates quickly and leaves nice lacing behind.  8

Aroma: My mouth started salivating from the hints of coffee and bourbon layered on top of the chocolate, vanilla and toffee. Nicely done.  8

Flavor: A nicely balanced brew. The bitterness of the coffee lingers all the way through. It's balanced out by the sweetness of toffee, chocolate and a bit of cherry. Get a nice pinch of the bourbon character as well.  9

Mouthfeel: Full bodied but not too thick and syrupy. Has the right amount of carbonation with nice acidity level.   9

Overall: This is a fine example of a bourbon barrel imperial stout. I wish I had bought another one but you can't always do that when buying on a budget and also wanting all the beers. If you can find this, pay whatever they are asking for it...it's worth it. 8.5

Duchesse Chocolate Cherry by Brouwerij Verhaeghe

Beer Advocate - 4.18/5
Untappd - 4.07/5

23B. Flanders Red Ale

A sour, fruity, red wine-like Belgianstyle ale with interesting supportive malt flavors and fruit complexity. The dry finish and tannin completes the mental image of a fine red wine.

Purchased from Tavour - Hails from Vichte, Belgium.

So I have this thing against the Flanders Red style. I had a bad experience once and for some reason or another, I couldn't let it go. I vowed to never again, try another Flanders Red. Tavour then offered up this particular ale and I ended up with it...without realizing that it was indeed a Flanders Red. I guess it's time to find out what I though...On to the review!

Appearance: The coloring of the brew is that of a lighter Pinot Noir but not quite a Rosé. The head is, of course, the coloring of a Rosé. Looks inviting.  8.6

Aroma: An inviting tart aroma that has notes of cherry and chocolate with an earthiness. Maybe from the oak casks.  8

Flavor: The tartness of the cherry combined with the loveliness of the chocolate is quite delicious. Has a touch of oak and vanilla.  8.2

Mouthfeel: Light and crisp with a the perfect, light carbonation. Has a nice, dry finish.  8

Overall: Huh. I guess I shouldn't base an entire style of beer on just one sample. This Flanders Red Ale was delicious and I wish I had another right now. I am curious as to how the regular Duchesse (without the chocolate cherry part) would mingle with my taste buds. If I can find it, I will give it a go.  8.2
